I am a big fan of James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits”. Lots of great content and ideas that have made a big difference to my own life habits. I was watching an interview with him on CBS News from 2018 where he discussed his book. He finished with one example that really resonated with me. I first heard this great habit from a fellow coach when we were studying for the Adv. Diploma in Corporate, Leadership and Personal Coaching with Kingstown College. On one of the lecture weekends, we were having a coffee break. The sun was shining so a few of us went for a stroll around the hotel gardens to get some fresh air. I was training for my first marathon at the time and I mentioned to my colleague “I have to run 18 miles in the morning before coming to lectures.” (Lectures started at 10am). She turned to me and said “No Maurice, you GET to run 18 miles in the morning before lectures”.
Replacing “I have to” with “I get to”.
So simple yet so incredibly powerful.
I’ve used it ever since.
